Ceiling puck light lens removal (152402)

Post by Yahoo_Upload » 25 Jan 2013 13:39

I have searched back for 6 months and did not find a post on how to remove the all glass round ceiling lights in my '05 Sig. Some are mounted in the cabinets over the sofas and in the bathrooms, and many others are mounted in the padded vinyl ceiling.

My hands have mild arthritis and I was unable to remove the lenses to change replace bulbs or install LED ones using a jar lid opener or suction cup, even though I had used a credit card to release the vinyl ceiling material underneath the edge of the fixture.

So...... I purchased an inexpensive short "Quick Clamp" from Harbor Freight. The nice Irwin brand ones from Lowes are too large.

Initially I had beveled the back side of the pad with a denture adjusting drill so it would not damage the vinyl ceiling, but the pad was too soft, so I removed the pad and discovered that the clamp material itself would create enough friction on the lens that I could easily turn the lens and remove it. It does seem to help to rotate the lens back and forth a few times as you are turning it. (like extracting a tooth!)

Hope this is a helpful hint for anyone removing this type of light lens. I've struggled with it for a couple of years until today.

Dr. Sam,

I changed out every one in our 06 Sig and very few were easy, most were
difficult, and about 10% were impossible. I believe we had 74 of the
little buggers.

Like you, I tried many different tools and some were more helpful than
others. For the 10% that were impossible, I resorted to smacking them
with a ballpeen hammer, holding a trash can beneath. It was quick and
effective. Of course the shattered glass lens had to be replaced and I had
pre-purchased spares. I might could have eventually worked some of the
impossible ones loose but when I was sure I had enough replacement lens
on hand, my patience with an exceptionally stubborn one quickly brought out
the hammer. Take THAT, sucker!!!

All my ceiling and cabinet lights are spotlessly clean and all converted to
LED. It was a job but worth it. Just dont ask me to do yours.

Sam

Thanks for the tip. I got a ton of them Quick Clamps. Some even have 24" grip.

Dr Sam,

I am on my way to Harbor Freight, thanks for the tip.

I too, have tried multiple devices on one pesky lens without success.
