Carefree Awning Repair - Phoenix, AZ Area??? (198447)

Post by Yahoo_Upload » 02 Jan 2015 04:55

As luck would have it, 25 miles from home on the New Year's holiday, as we proceeded down the road heading for warm climates our big Carefree awning acted up. I saw the vertical arm covers moving around in the mirror so stopped thinking the awning was not totally closed. Alas, not only wouldn't it close the last tiny bit but as soon as I powered it up and touched the switch, it proceeded to open to its full extension and refuse to close again. With lots of roping, pulling and tugging from a ladder, two of us were able to force it to retract by manually pulling on the complex of arms that support the awning. The fabric roller itself seemed to still have a working spring mechanism as it rolled up neatly as the arms were forced down (against the piston pressure). It wouldn't stay closed so I hauled out the duct tape and bound it securely to the moho body and continued our journey to the desert. Now it needs to get fixed/replaced or whatever.
Any suggestions for repair service in the Phoenix area? We are parked in El Mirage so a mobile repair is probably preferable although I'd drive a ways for the best service.
Also, any thoughts on just trashing the Carefree unit and replacing it with something else, even a manual awning? I've read a lot of comments on Monacoers and other RV forums about Carefree's lack of service and support. What have others done in such a situation? This awning is about 20 feet long.
Thanks,
Bill W.

Bill W,
I am not sure whether ShadePro would come to the Phoenix area to service
your patio awning.
See sevice area here:
http://www.shadepro.net/awning_installation_services.html
Also they plan to be at Quartzite later this month according to their rally
schedule. And later they will be in Phoenix for a different rally.
http://www.shadepro.net/Rallies.html
You could always give them a call to see what they might say.

Reminds me of when I had a passenger side 20 ft Dometic awning in my DSDP unfurl on me at night in a rainstorm on I-10 at 60+mph!!!
FL highway patrol stopped and would not get out to help me. Just sat there with his headlights on me while I struggled with it by myself.
I wanted to try and salvage it but since I had no help, just had to cut it loose and leave it. Fortunately, there was no damage to the coach
or others.

What a CLUSTER....

Bill,
Sorry to say this is a fairly common problem with the Carefree awnings in the 06-08 time frame. Carefree offered a fix at a reasonable cost. The problem is the shaft doesn't have enough flats where it goes into the end cap on the roller. You need a new motor and roller cap assembly.
If you are at Pueblo El Mirage in El Mirage, AZ Premier Coach is on the corner of El Mirage RD and Northern Ave. about 2 miles south of you.
They do a lot of RV body work and may be a Carefree repair facility.

I think it's called Best Awning have used them several times in Arizona, in Quartzsite and Parker and they are mobile. I thought they were very reasonable.

Emerald Pointe RV Resort (198518)

Post by Yahoo_Upload » 03 Jan 2015 06:50

Just looking at this property. I have a brother & family nearby in Tampa
and I might be interested. I know and like the area very well but does anyone
know of someone who lives with RV there etc.? Looks like it has everything I need. Could
be a bit bigger but then just I’d have more “stuff” to take care of when I’m gone up
North for the summers, etc.. or alternating winters at QZ, etc..

http://www.emeraldpointervresort.com/

Thoughts.. good, bad, indifferent ?

Thx,

Bill W, Richard S,

Last spring I ordered a short Carefree Kover III from Shade pro for my
bedroom slide. It arrived, was in great shape and I installed it. After
doing that I then ordered a longer one for the living area slide. When
it arrived it was marked with black marks about middle the cover as well
as both end caps. The middle was even rubbed through to the metal. The
black could not be clean with everything I tried. I called them,
discussed it issue and sent pictures. Couple of weeks, no response.
Called again and they discussed possible "replacement" of items or
"allowance"...would get back to me. Couple of weeks no response. Called
Carefree and discussed issue. Carefree said it sounded like an issue
they would make allowance, but ShadePro had to initiate the paperwork.
Called ShadePro and related the information from Carefree. ShadePro said
they would do so. Several weeks went by without any word from Shade Pro.
In all this, ShadePro had NEVER called me, I always had to call
ShadePro. finally I disputed the credit card charge with Visa and got
their attention. However, they told Visa that they had "offered" to
replace or allowance...they never did, they discussed it, but never
called and made any offer. Long story, they finally through Visa made an
allowance for the defective unit.

Hope others have experience as on the first item rather than last.

Bill:
I had a near miss with my carefree. Saw it starting to open in the rear view mirror and was able to secure it before it opened on the road.
I called Carefree with the thought of purchasing a new "hub" for the awning. They said the motor and hub are an assembly and offered to ship me one at their cost. They said they could not pay for installation, but that was an easy 30 minute exercise. I'd try calling them.
It's a well known problem and I'm sure they are trying to avoid any more liability than they already have.
Good luck.

Carefree had a program for this model awning and they were replacing the
motors/shafts free of charge.
I have heard conflicting rumors about this program ending. Others have said
it is still going on. I would do as suggested

and contact them and let them know what happened. Maybe they will step up
and ship you a new unit.

A lot of the HR guys have had great success with Carefree and this program.
It is worth the try.
